Avatar Session Tips blog has a great article with some awesome insight into the transfer they did to digitize Michael Jackson's Thriller. They discuss what they have witnessed when making many classic records and have penned a great read for anyone who makes records.

Wow! In the past we have encouraged you to make a cheap video, with some ideas for you. We did not see this coming this fast though! It is for the song "play" by BJSR. Looks like the video quality on that iPhone 3Gs is pretty great!
*Update*
Another cool video shot on the 3GS on launch day after the jump!

Earlier this week we told you about Freecycle, a place where you can give things you no longer need to someone who does, as well as get things someone else no longer needs. We were then informed of Gigoit, which is like Freecycle with some cool additions such as
  • Member Feedback - In the way you are able to rate your experience from other users.
  • You can enter in location specific parameters such as how far you are willing to travel.
  • The ability to post photos.

Jelli radio has gone live! This weekend a crowd sourced radio station went live on San Francisco's Live 105. They tout themselves as being 100% listener controlled radio. Now everyone who is a member of Jelli's website can vote on the playlist. Pretty great idea to answer the complaints many have have had of radio playlists over the years. What is awesome is you can easily get your music added to their service! Simply email them to get your music added to the service!

We finally have some good news in the world of concert tickets. Consumerist has the deal on a new agreement that Ticketmasters shady TicketsNow will no longer be allowed to hide behind elusive domain names, fake sites for local venues selling tickets, and a few other pro consumer decisions. They also got a $50K fine, which is like fining you or I a penny. Great news for all of us who enjoy concerts. Go to Consumerist for the whole deal!

Across the music message boards of the Internetz, dance rockers Cobra Starship are being bemoaned for taking a paid product placement from Trojan condoms in their latest video. The idea of people discussing selling out in 2009 could not be more boring to any us over 16. However one idea that is not discussed enough is your band/label business as a social business.

A social business is one that does not put profits before people. In that profitability and making money is not a bad thing and if anything encouraged as long as you are contributing to the greater good of humanity. This does not mean paying into a charity here and there to disguise the fact that in reality you are trying to exploit your workers and customers, this means finding strategic ways to make sure you are helping the world become a better place with in your business structure.
New twitter layout.png
If you haven't noticed, Twitter is getting a lot like Myspace, in the way that every other person messaging you is a porn star or some cheesy spammer. Twitter thankfully has cracked down on this in the way of making it easier to find quality friends with an awesome new view of followers. If you are following our suggestions for finding Twitter followers from bands that are similar to yours, this new feature makes it much easier. In one click you can now follow whoever you would like to follow. As well, there is now a list of everyone's profile information and last tweet so you can make sure you aren't following any worthless porn stars and spammers. Get to work.

If you have read Musformation before you know we aren't too fond of the major labels business practices. However, we gotta call truthiness when we see it. Unfortunately, a blog post has been aggregated by the other music industry blogs, that we feel has some half truths and we are forced to defend our unlikely bed fellows at the majors. Umair Haque wrote an article entitled Michael Jackson and the Zombie Economy that we have a bit of beef with. Read below:

"Let's use MJ's tragic death as a mini case-study. $300 million over, for example, 25 years? That's $12 million a year.I'm deliberately leaving out ads, endorsements, concerts, etc., to focus on the the structural problems in one industry: music.

If the world's biggest pop star only made $12 million a year from his recordings, why would anyone make serious music? Where did the rest of the money go? Why, straight into record labels' pockets. Did they make better music with it? Nope -- they made Britney and Lady GaGa. And that's how they killed themselves: by underinvesting in quality, to rake in the take.

Wait a second -- that sounds familiar. You can add back in the endorsements, etc. now -- they only double the figure: to about $25 million.

If the world's biggest pop star only made $25 million a year in total, something's very, very wrong. Where's the rest of the money? Why can't a resource as scarce as the King of Pop capture more value?"

There is a fact that is left out - since 2001 Michael was left with a mountain of debt to his record company over the epic fail of Invincible. In 2002 Sony claimed Michael owed them $200 million, due in large part to the insane spending to make this "comeback record." Recording costs were rumored at over $100 million alone, with around the same amount put into promotion. Anyone with a cursory knowledge of the major labels royalty structure knows you are not getting a check from them until you recoup a debt. In this case, no matter how well Thriller may have still sold post-Invincible, they were able to take any sales of Michael's previous recording to recoup his previous debt.

While Haque makes countless good points in this article, and we agree with nearly everything he says, there facts are needed to complete the story. Michael would have made a lot more money if he had been the least bit frugal in his spending and not stood for the usual major label excess (or should I say his handlers shouldn't have stood for it). Had he gone another route and been smart enough to realize the public still was not ready for a record from him, toured to promote the record, he would have still been making money from the labels. The system was in place when he had signed his latest contract and he knew if the record failed he would be penalized with sales from his back catalog not coming to him. This isn't just a tale of a broken economy and the usual stupidity of the majors. It is also a tale of poor artists decisions.

Previously, we broke the news that Pandora would be allowing artists to upload their music directly to their site. They have now joined up with Amazon to bring some new features like album art. One small problem, to be a part of the site you will need to be a part of the

Amazon Advantage Program. This service costs $29.95 each year. This is a small price to pay to get on one of the best music recommendation engines on the net and get additional services for doing so.

thepirate google.jpg
In a move no one saw coming The Pirate Bay has been sold. ARS has the lowdown:
"The Pirate Bay has been sold--and the new owners plan to make it a legal service that allows "content providers and copyright owners [to] get paid for content that is downloaded via the site."

Global Gaming Factory X AB, a Swedish firm that runs Internet cafes and game centers, plans to buy The Pirate Bay for 60 million kronor, twice the fine that was slapped on The Pirate Bay defendants by a Stockholm court earlier this year."

While this won't help their legal woes at least they avoid any future problems with the law for the founders. More at ARS.

As we have all learned in the past year, the banking system in this country finds another disgusting way to rip you off and screw you in every orfice you let be uncovered. If you are tired of paying stupid fees and maintaining minimum balances there is hope. Findabetterbank is a free, unbiased tool to help you find a better bank near you. This can save you tons of money every month and help you make an informed decision as to where you should put your hard earned money. (via Lifehacker)

The Pirate Bay Sets Fire At YouTube

First there was the PirateGoogle to make the social commentary that the torrent site is not doing anything that Google and YouTube isn't. They have decided to prove this point even by launcing The Video Bay. While this won't give them any help solving their legal woes, it is another commentary on the never ending puzzle of copyright circling music and movies these day.

Humor Mondays: 80's Sax Solos Rated

| | Comments () | TrackBacks (0)
saxd00d.jpgI have found Musformation's new favorite site! An amazing gem of a human has decided to rate and critique tons of 80's Sax Solos. I will allow the author to explain the vision in their own words:

"I realized about 5 years ago that at some point in the 80s, lots of the popular music started incorporating saxophone solos into their songs. Some of them are fine, but most of them are ridiculous to have in the songs. Below, I have attempted to separate the quality and appropriateness of the solos from what I think of the song as a whole (I still really like most of these songs, even the ones with low grades). Click on the Play buttons to play the samples."
Check it out.

To many fans of late 90's alterna-rock Far's Water & Solutions was one of those records you couldn't believe didn't take over the world. Well, rejoice they are back on the scene and they want you to contribute gang vocals to one of their new songs. A pretty cool idea to get your fans involved and get a huge gang vocal. Here is what you do, if you want to be involved.

1. Watch the intro video here
2. Record the audio and/or video of you (and your friends and family) screaming along
3. Post the recording anywhere you like (YouTube, Facebook, etc)
4. Send the link (not the file) to us in any number of ways:
- Post it in a comment at http://thebandfar.com/news/839
- Tweet it at http://twitter.com/thebandfar
- Post it as a comment at http://myspace.com/thebandfar

Slashdot is reporting Pandora in France is displaying a sad message for those abroad who love this amazing service. Here is a letter from one of their readers:

"I'm in France for the summer and have been listening to Pandora at work. I tried logging on tonight and was greeted with a surprising message: 'We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the US. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative. ... The pace of global licensing is hard to predict, but we have the ultimate goal of being able to offer our service everywhere.' I'm not sure what the deal is or what licensing requirements suddenly changed, but Pandora in France is no more..."

Hopefully Pandora will soon work this out to keep giving the people the awesome experience of their service.

Scott Church who ran the often linked and very awesome Pro Tools Blog (now taken offline) was one of the only easily accessible voices at Digidesign. ProToolerBlog did extensive coverage this week about this and the fact that Dave Lebolt and Peter Gorges the other two big faces have left the company. With a new logo and some odd new plans, should us Pro Tools owners fear what is next there. Is this changing of the guard a sign of a corporation putting profit before sense (as Avid/Digidesign has frequently been accused of with not the greatest facts behind the arguemant)? We are very curious to find out what will happen next and believe whatever they unveil at AES will either show a great new direction or the jumping of a fail whale sized shark. Can't wait to see!
