I spent all of last night playing with Melodyne DNA (as you can see from the above video some other people did as well). It is truly amazing that they have somehow made all audio open source! While many of the lazier producers among us have thought about using this so they don't need to be as concerned with intonation in chords, I don't think this is going to fix that (at least this version) what it will do is allow artist to use samples they never dreamed of before. Copyright law is going to have a hard time with this one. While I think many artists will take classic riffs from other artists work and change them slightly to make a new hook, the true power of DNA is the ability to take another song and play with the notes and make something new. Throughout the next few days I am going to upload some videos of the stuff I have been messing around with so far. In my experience it works best on a track where there is one or two instruments going. If you try to change a track with drums or vocals with some guitars or keys as well, it gets a little funky. While if you take a guitar only intro to a song and start moving the individual chords it can do some pretty amazing things.
gagbeyonce.jpgAs if you needed more proof that the majors are going to rape you for every cent. Australian Idol Damon Leith is claiming he is the victim of the fine print in a contract where a performer receives none of the royalties from album sales. Rough! Another story that shows you better have a great lawyer before you buy that big house. More here.

Weekend Watching: A Documentery On the KLF

| | Comments () | TrackBacks (0)

We have covered The KLF (aka The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu) before. They were a House Group from the early 90's who pioneered such genres as "Stadium House" and "Ambient House". They also wrote one of my favorite pieces of Internet hilarity How To Have A Number One The Easy Way(which is a how-to guide for exactly that). This doc shows why this band was so special and interesting, a great watch for the weekend. Head to the jump for the rest!

Using Sound Cloud Groups For More Exposure

Soundcloud.jpgWe've spoken a good bit before about the awesome free services that SoundCloud offers and why you should be a part of it.  Today we're going to talk about SoundCloud Groups.   After you've signed up for the free account, By searching the Groups function you can enter in a keyword (if you were my band you might say "Electro" to find Groups similar to you).    From there you can find detailed Groups that you can upload your tracks to (sometimes the Groups are moderated and your song must be approved before it is heard by others).  This sort of targeted file sharing is much more likely to bring you quality listeners who are attentive and already into your style of music.  The folks who are on SoundCloud are also "taste-maker" type individuals, the kind of people who: know about new music first, are tech-savvy and usually have blogs of their own where they are likely to spread the word about your music if they like what they hear.  When searching Groups SoundCloud shows a small set of icons with tells you important info like how many pople are in the group, how many songs have been uploaded and how many comments have been made.  This can make things a lot faster when decided who is actually worth your time for an upload.   Groups are also a good way to find out what your competition is sounding like or to meet new bands to play shows with or even to find artists to help remix your stuff.  Get on this bandwagon before it blows up out of control- right now it seems like an open playing field and something that can definitely get you some visibility.

We all know that one of the most effective ways to get new fans is to get your fans to recommend you to a friend. But how do you get them to do this? Give them incentive. Lately, we have been seeing bands like The Used and AFI using Twitter to spread the word about their new music using high tech Apps that get people to ReTweet links to their music. If you aren't a web programmer this can be a bit intimidating, but with a hour or two of time you can easily do these same techniques in a less automated way. Follow me to the jump and I will show you how to get the word spread about your new song via Twitter and expand your Twitter followers as well as getting new people to listen to your music.

I often argue that years of reading rock journalism and watching movies teaches musicians very stupid myths about how the music industry works. One of those myths is that if you are good enough that a manager, A&R man, or whoever is going to scoop you up and you are never going to have to worry about the business side of your music career ever again. Unfortunately this is RARELY the case. When we say rarely the case we mean one in a million.

What many bands do not realize is that most managers and A&R people who are successful aren't rocket scientists or even hard working. There have been countless successful careers in this industry that have been built on finding bands who have the whole package of good songs and business savvy and riding their coattails to the top. Even in the cases where the music industry figure is astute and has a great work ethic they don't want to be carrying all of the weight, especially in this age of smaller budgets. Follow me to the jump and we will discuss why saying or being "no good at the business side of things" is a one way ticket to your parents basement for the rest of your life.

Musicians who are proactive with their careers need to know there certain characteristics in today's lawyers that can be unique, therefore molding you to the new industry.  Don't rack up insane legal bills and partner with some sleazy douche attorney.  You need to know exactly what to look for. ASCAPFAILGOOD.jpgASCAP and BMI were once artist friendly respectable institutions, but with their recent actions they have turned themselves into another shameful, pathetic institution much like the RIAA. In their latest next-level-of-stupidity-move they have decided that they should get royalties for the 30 second previews played in the iTunes store. Not realizing that no one uses these for music consumption and are instead tools to usually make sure you bought the right song (seeing as if you want to listen to a song everyone knows you just go to YouTube) before you actually buy it. These companies should be grateful people are going through a legal means to consume music since it is becoming rare and the last thing we need is iTunes jacking up their already inflated share of royalties in order to line ASCAP and BMI's pockets. Nevermind if Apple starts charging for the preview to compensate for this new added cost. Pathetic! If you are a member of either of these organizations, write them and tell them how stupid this action is as well as their other retarded ideas like harassing bloggers and ringtones. More here.
