Over on Evolver's blog they have an article that points to an important change in music listening habits. Listeners are now streaming as much music as they download. This means that your strategy could probably use a tweak from concentrating on iTunes and get more concentrated on streaming sites like Rdio (which I use everyday), Last.FM and Spotify. Read the article here and recognize an important shift in music.

A cool tip from the blog The New Rockstar Philosophy is that if you are a label you can go straight to iTunes and skip the aggregate services like Tunecore, CDBaby, ReverbNation, etc. by using iTunes Connect While this may seem totally awesome one of the things to remember is that those services also bring your music to tons of other digital music vendors. Though you can gain direct access to iTunes reports by using this method. Read more here.

A List Of Sites To Put Your Music Video On

The blog Indie Music Tech as usual has brought an extensive list of sites that will host your music video. This can be very helpful in making sure your music gets discovered by as many people as possible. Check it out here.
double.GIFIf you're smart, you probably keep a list of all the names, email addresses and contact info for people that have written about your band before (or people you want to write about your band).  One thing to consider when accessing your contacts is that the blog world operates much differently than you're probably used to.  Blogs (often even influential ones) rise up to prominence and then quickly close down seemingly without reason.  When you're sending out your stuff to a contact list, you could be emailing someone who no longer even maintains their blog, wasting your time and theirs.  Another common and unfortunate problem is that blogs often change their email address (or preferred way of receiving submissions) without telling anyone.  Be sure to double-check and make sure you have the most updated email/contact info and that the blog you are writing to is in fact still being maintained.

Are You Up For The Role Of Music Manager?

music think tank.pngThe Music Think Tank has up a seriously academic article on the role of music management today. While being very serious and straight it asks many of the right questions of if you are prepared to be a music manager today. While it may not cite some of the funny things you may do as a a music manager like researching homeopathic treatments for your sick, uninsured bands, talking the drummer down from slashing another band's tires and hanging a white boy rapper upside down from a building and demanding royalties. It still serves as a great primer on some questions you should ask yourself before going into business with a group.

Map-Concert03.jpg
Concert tracking services are some of the coolest recent technologies to happen to the live music experiences. With that said many bands neglect their presence on them. Despite the fact that you may wonder how many people who use them, the important thing to remember about who uses them is that they are huge live music fans who are always looking to go and see shows. MakeUseOf has a great list of these types of services that you should check to be sure your concert dates are always listen on so that your fans will know you are coming to town. Check it here.
Topspin site.jpg
Digital Music News released a big headline that is counter to much of the wisdom on digital vs. physical that we hear in the music biz today. We are constantly told that physical sales are dying and digital is everything. With Topspin reporting that 75% of their revenue comes from physical sales it doesn't prive that theory wrong as much as show there is still a big place for physical sales in your release strategy.

For one, we have to keep in mind one of the best practices that Topspin employs is using tiered incentives to get fans to buy unique merchandise with price tags that cater to each fan's devotion to the group. By making packages where fans can pay for high ticket items and getting super fans to buy more than just the music you can greatly increase revenues and make sure you get the most out of every sale.

What this also shows is the importance of selling direct-to-fan with more than just digital items. Despite all of the "digital hype" fans still want physical items that they can put their hands on. Don't neglect the importance of selling physical products today.
Screen shot 2010-11-09 at 1.03.18 PM.pngAre you doing an Australian tour soon? It can get quite annoying to your fans to see updates for merch sales and show announcements from thousands of miles away. One way you can be less annoying is to geo-target your updates so that only those people in the country you are playing see these updates. To do this simply click the lock next to your status update and you can target languages and countries with updates!
CREATESPACE.pngCreatespace has long been a great way to get high quality CDs pressed for your music while not having to order thousands of them to keep prices reasonable. They have just announced that they have made an improved interface and given more options for pressing your CDs. Check them out here.
